Your Role as a Mentor
We’re asking for your time, enthusiasm, and commitment to help make a difference. Here’s what being a mentor involves:
- Commit to Six Meetings: Meet with your mentee (digitally or face-to-face) at least six times, ideally before the end of March 2025.
- Complete Safeguarding Checks and Training: Participate in our training and vetting process to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
- Follow the Community Action Framework: Use our structured framework to guide your mentee through identifying and achieving a community action goal.
- Record Meetings Easily: Log your meetings and track progress using our simple digital chatbot—quick and hassle-free!
- Champion Your Mentee: Support your mentee to promote their achievements and be their biggest advocate in a public arena when appropriate.
- Be a Positive Role Model: Provide encouragement, guidance, and a listening ear, helping your mentee build confidence and develop their own voice.
Together, you’ll be creating real change—one meeting at a time.
The Mentoring Process
Our programme is structured to help you and your mentee build a strong partnership and achieve meaningful outcomes together. Here’s what the process looks like:
Step 1: Get Trained and Ready
Complete our training sessions and safeguarding checks to prepare you for your mentoring journey.
Step 2: Get Matched
We’ll match you with a young person based on shared interests and geographical location, ensuring the best possible connection.
Step 3: Six Focused Meetings to Set and Achieve a Community Goal
Meet with your mentee (either online or in-person) at least six times, using our Community Action Framework to set a meaningful community project and support your mentee in making it a reality.
Step 4: Achieve and Reflect
Help your mentee implement their project, track progress, and celebrate successes using our easy-to-use digital tools designed to simplify recording and reflecting on each meeting.
Step 5: Celebrate and Share
Promote your mentee’s achievements, share their success story, and get recognised for the impact you’ve made together.
Who You’ll Be Supporting
As a mentor, you’ll be working with young people aged 16-17 who are some of the most underserved in their communities. These young people may have experienced discrimination, have poor school attendance, or struggle with their mental health. They have enormous potential, but need guidance, encouragement, and someone who believes in them.
You’ll help them:
- Find Their Voice: Encourage them to express their ideas and take ownership of their goals.
- Build Confidence: Support them in overcoming challenges and celebrating their progress.
- Create Community Impact: Guide them in identifying and completing a local community project that they can be proud of.
With your support, they’ll gain the tools, confidence, and resilience to take on new challenges and create a brighter future for themselves.
“We want to shine a light on the incredible potential these young people have and show them that there’s a community behind them, cheering them on. Mentorship is more than just guidance – it’s about giving someone the confidence to dream big and the tools to achieve those dreams.”
Brian Hammersley, Mentor

The Minds Behind the Mission
The National Citizen Service (NCS) and Goal 17 have come together to unlock the potential of young people by helping them find their voice and their place within their communities. This isn’t just about mentoring—it’s about giving young people the confidence and tools they need to step up and own their future.
NCS has long been at the forefront of youth engagement, giving thousands of young people across the UK the opportunity to broaden their horizons and contribute to society. Their programmes help build self-belief, resilience, and purpose—qualities that are essential for every young person’s success.
Goal 17 brings years of experience in delivering impactful mentoring programmes that support young people to pursue their passions and take charge of their own development. Our focus is on creating supportive, one-on-one relationships that help young people explore their interests, build new skills, and make decisions that are meaningful to them.
Together, we’re creating a space where young people can feel heard, supported, and excited to take action. Through this mentoring programme, young people are encouraged to explore their potential and discover the unique ways they can make a difference—not just for themselves, but for those around them. It’s about having the opportunity to take the lead, pursue a project they believe in, and see firsthand the impact they can create.
Whether it’s through volunteering, advocating for change, or simply stepping up to support a cause they care about, this programme is about showing every young person that they have a place, a voice, and a future they can shape.
