Care Leaver Mentoring
For Businesses and Supporters
by Goal 17
Empower Young People, Elevate Your Business
Â
There are over 50,000 Care Leavers aged 17 to 21 in the UK
Â
Every number has a story, and every story deserves a mentor.
Imagine being just 18 years old, having no family or support network, then having to leave home and make it on your own.
That is what young Care Leavers face as they legally become adults. They must leave their foster or children’s homes and very quickly adapt to navigating the wider world, solo. It’s a scary time but with just a little support these resilient and adaptive young adults can achieve brilliant things.
You can be part of helping these deserving young people make the best possible start to their new lives.
3 Ways You Can Support:
Volunteer Promotion
Boost employee engagement and morale by promoting volunteer mentoring opportunities. Encouraging your staff, clients, and network to get involved not only enriches their lives but also fosters a positive company culture.
Opportunities for Young People
Enhance your company's social impact while tapping into a pool of diverse talent by offering Care Leavers opportunities to share skills, utilise facilities, and engage in fun activities. Empower them to grow personally while fostering a positive brand image and culture within your organisation.
Programme Sponsorship
Elevate your company's impact by sponsoring programs in new locations or expanding opportunities for more young care leavers. Your sponsorship directly supports the growth and expansion of our initiatives, showcasing your commitment to social responsibility and community empowerment.

Who are Care Leavers?
Care leavers are young adults who, for no fault of their own, ended up in the care system as children. Then, at 18, they are expected to very quickly transition to independent living and adulthood with no family support and limited other networks to lean on.
They face unique challenges, such as isolation, financial instability, and limited access to education and employment opportunities.
Why Mentoring and Why NOW?
Â
Seizing the moment:
We have an opportunity to catch these young adults just as they face big change and significant isolation. Having a mentor at this time can make more difference than at any other time. In fact, for many young people, it can be the lifeline they so desperately need.
Â
Big return on commitment:
The time our mentors spend with their mentees is generally only a couple of hours a month, but the impact is huge. Mentees tell us that just knowing there is someone who has got their back gives them a vast sense of confidence and bravery to navigate the challenges they face.
Â
Volunteers change the dynamic:
Care leavers are used to having well-meaning adults coming in and out of their lives. Most have lost track of the number of social workers they know! However, pretty much every one of these adults has always been paid to support them. Our volunteer mentors are different. They are there purely because they care and that means the world to these young people. Mentees tell us this allows them to believe in themselves and gain a new sense of self-worth.
